Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) started its first free school in 1880. With our mission “to promote education and to nurture youngsters”, TWGHs provides comprehensive and multifarious services for children and young people to enable them to develop their fullest potential and eventually to serve the community. To date TWGHs is operating 50 schools, including a Community College operated in partnership with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 18 secondary schools, 14 primary schools, 15 kindergartens and 2 special schools.
In response to social changes and in support of the government policy of expanding tertiary education, TWGHs partnered with The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005 to establish The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Community College (CUTW). CUTW offers a wide range of programmes, mainly Associate Degree Programmes for secondary school leavers and Pre-Associate Degree holders, preparing them for further education as well as equipping them for future career.
Apart from the provision of education opportunities, the CUTW emphasizes on the holistic development of students. Various extra-curricular activities are organized to enlighten students’ study life. “Celebrity Talks”, which is one of our key activities, invites renowned persons from the community to share their entrepreneurial experience. The outcome is encouraging as students were inspired by their sharing. In addition, the College has arranged overseas exchange tours for students to enhance their international outlook. Thanks to the generous support from donors of TWGHs, scholarships and financial aids have been set up to reward students of academic merit and assist those with financial difficulties.
In stepping into our seventh year of operation, CUTW has gained increasing recognition in the community, which can be reflected by the increasing number of students enrolled each year. Overall, 70% of graduates from the Associate Degree Programmes are eligible for articulation to Bachelor’s Degree Programmes offered by local and overseas universities. It is encouraging to note that for the 2009/10 Associate of Science Programme in Health Care, 24 out of 27 graduates of the first cohort were enrolled as Year 3 students of the Bachelor of Nursing Programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. This remarkable achievement is a manifestation of the concerted effort of students and staff of the College.
In conclusion, I hope that every student of our College will be able to achieve his or her goal and live a meaningful and abundant life.
